WELCOME TO SOPOT
History of Sopot
1823 is recognized as the beginning of a health resort called Sopot. This was when Doctor Jean Georg Haffner built the first professional “Bathing Institute” here. At that time, a health park, wooden baths, as well as the first wooden pier - 63 meters long, an archer for today’s „Molo”, came into existence. The main street, connecting upper village with fishing village, was also built. Street was given the name SeeStraβe (Sea Street – today’s Bohaterów Monte Cassino Street).
Effectuating the Gdansk – Berlin railroad in 1870 was a milestone in the history of the resort. The number of 12,5 thousand visitors, reflects its dynamic expansion at that time. In 1901 Sopot was given civic rights.
During interwar era “Molo” was rebuilt to reach its present length of 512 meters, which up till now accounts for the longest wooden pier in Europe. At that time, 30 thousand foreigners would visit Sopot each year.

The first Spa Facility (Dom Kuracyjny) was built here in 1824. To meet the needs of dynamically developing town, they rebuilt it completely twice within a century.
The third Spa Facility (Dom Zdrojowy) located on the “Health Square” together with the hotel building closing the square from the northern side, became the archer for Sheraton Sopot Hotel Conference Center and Spa. At first the hotel was called “Guest House”, during interwar era it was given the name Kurhaus-Hotel. A gallery on the first floor connected it to the Spa Facility.
Brick veranda which surrounded “Health Square” from the east side, protected it from the strong sea winds. It was replaced with new semicircular walking veranda in 1928, which has been kept in good condition up till now. Up till today we can also admire the fountain, placed in the middle of the “Health Square”.
Right after The First World War, famous Sopot casino began its activity in the Spa Facility building. A couple of rooms were adapted for casino purposes. It altered the Celeste Room into Roulette Room, the Jasmine Room became the Baccarat Room and the former Wine Room received the name Kasino-Bar.
On March 23rd 1945 Red Army entered Sopot. As a result of warfare as well as the purposeful arsons, 10% of the town buildings were destroyed including the whole Spa Complex together with the hotel, casino and the lower part of Bohaterów Monte Cassino Street. On February 19th 1999 Sopot officially became a health resort.
